1966 – studied at the schools No.8 and
No.44, Moscow;
1973 – graduated from the Moscow Physics
Technical Institute gained the flight dynamics and space vehicles control
major and engineer-physician diploma;
1980 – graduated from the part-time department
of the All-Union Law Institute and acquired the lawyer qualification;
1981 – graduated from the journalism part-time
department of the Lomonosov Moscow State University and got the journalist
qualification;
2000 – finished the higher courses of
the General Staff Military Academy for the Russian Military Forces;
1992 – was given Doctor of Law Science
degree.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
September 22, 1966 to August 1 –
a laboratory assistant of the Crystallography Institute for The
Soviet Academy of Sciences;
September 13, 1973 to May 16, 1980 - an
engineer, senior engineer of department 311 (033) of the central design
office (the Energia corporation);
May 19, 1980 to May 16, 1991 – a junior
research officer, research officer, senior research officer of the Institute
for State and Law of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Later up to 1994 had
a part-time job at the same institute;
from June 2, 1993 – an aide for B. Eltsin
the Russian president;
January 6, 1994 to June 18, 1996 – a National
Security aide of the Russian president;
From July 25, 1996 – a secretary of the
Russian Defence Council, aide for the Russian president;
August 28, 1997 to February 12, 1998 –
an aide for the Russian president (was responsible for Defence and Security
issues). Relieved of his office due to the staff reduction.

order appointed to a cosmonaut-researcher position of the cosmonaut corps

1998 - a cosmonaut-researcher of the
Soyuz-28 and Mir Primary Expedition-26 along with G. Padalka and S. Avdeyev.
Landed on earth aboard the Soyuz TM-27 resupplier vehicle along with T.
Musabaev and N. Budarin. Flight duration: 11 days 19 hours
41 min. 33 sec. Call sign: Altair-3/Crystal-3;
The second mission April 28 to May 6, 2001
– a flight-engineer of the Soyuz TM-32 on the ISS-T1 2S along
with T. Musabaev and D. Tito (USA). Landed aboard the Soyuz TM-31. Flight
duration: 07 days 22 hours 05 min 05 sec. Call sign:
Crystal-3.
