DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: May 13, 1942, the Kazakhskaya SSR (Kazakhstan), Yuzhno-Kazakhstanskaya region, Bastadin district, Iskander village.
NATIONALITY: Russian.
EDUCATION:
1949 - 1953 – studied in secondary schools 107, 50, 44 of Tashkent town, Uzbekistan;
1953 - 1958 – studied in the Tashkent Suvorov School of Frontier Guard of the USSR Ministry of State Security, but had to return to the secondary school due to the disbandment of the military school;
1960 – graduated from the secondary school with the Gold Medal;
1965 – graduated from the Yeisk Higher Military Air Force School of Pilots, faculty “Combat use and exploitation of planes” and acquired honours degree of “pilot-engineer” .
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
From December 4, 1965 – a pilot-instructor, from June 8, 1968 - senior pilot-instructor of the air Force training regiment 963 of the Yeisk Higher Military Air Force School of Pilots.
DATE OF ENROLLMENT IN COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
April 27, 1970 - was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut in the cosmonaut corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center by the Air Force commander-in-chief order (the 5th enrollment);
From June 15, 1972 - cosmonaut of the 1st (orbital program) division of the 1st department.
RATING: a second-class military pilot (1969), a first-class cosmonaut (1982).
Minor planet No.3170 is named after Dzhanibekov.
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
May, 1973 – November, 1974 – a commander of the third crew for the first test flight together with B. Andreyev;
December, 1974 – June, 1975 – a commander of the fourth crew of the Soyuz-19 spacecraft on the APAS program together with B. Andreyev;
May 26, 1980 – back-up to the Soyuz-36 spacecraft commander V.N. Kubasov on the Soviet-Hungarian program;
April – October, 1983 – a commander of the back-up crew on the program of the 3rd Prime Expedition to the Salyut-7 orbital station together with M. Manarov.
SPACEFLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The 1st flight – January 10-16, 1978, as a commander of the Soyuz-27 spacecraft (landed on the Soyuz-26) on the program of the first visiting crew to the Salyut-6 orbital station together with O. Makarov. Worked on the station with prime crew – Yu. Romanenko and G. Grechko. Flight duration: 5 days 22 hours 58 minutes 58 seconds. Call sign: “Pamir-1”.
The 2nd flight – March 22-30, 1981 as a commander of the Soyuz-39 spacecraft Soviet-Mongolian crew together with Zh. Gurragcha. Worked on the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with the prime crew (V. Kovalenok and V. Savinykh) . Flight duration: 7 days 20 hours 42 minutes 03 seconds. Call sign: “Pamir-1”.
The 3rd flight – June 24 – July 2, 1982 as a commander of the Soyuz T-6 spacecraft together with A. Ivanchenkov and J.L. Chretien on the Soviet-French program. Worked on the Salyut-7 orbital station together with the prime crew (A. Berezovoy and V. Lebedev) . Flight duration: 7 days 21 hours 50 minutes 52 seconds. Call sign: “Pamir-1”.
The 4th flight – July 17-29, 1984 as a commander of the Soyuz T-12 spacecraft prime crew on the program of a visiting crew together with S. Savitskaya and I. Volk. During the flight on the Salyut-7 orbital station (the prime crew 3 of L. Kizim, V. Solovyov and O. Atkov) performed July 25, 1984, together with S. Savitskaya, 3hrs 35 min EVA with the purpose of testing the assembly for cutting and welding of materials in space. Flight duration: 11 days 19 hours 14 minutes 36 seconds. Call sign: “Pamir-1”.
The 5th flight – June 6 – September 26, 1985 as a commander of the Soyuz T-13 spacecraft together with V. Savinykh. The docking with the unguided and deactivated station was performed for the first time. The Salyut-7 orbital station was repaired, which allowed to continue its use in manned mode. Worked on the station together with V. Vasiutin, A. Volkov and G. Grechko, the crewmember he returned to the Earth with. Flight duration: 112 days 03 hours 12 minutes 36 seconds. Call sign: “Pamir-1”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS: 1982 - is discharged from the cosmonaut corps because of the appointment to a new position.
ACTIVITY AT THE GCTC:
June 24, 1986 – March 24 – Deputy Chief GCTC Department 1of cosmonaut training;
From July 20, 1988 – Chief GCTC Department 1;
August 7, 1987 - was transferred to the reserve having reached the age limit;
1999 - 2000 – Chief Scientific worker of the GCTC.
