DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: March 29, 1931, the RSFR (Russia), Kuibyshev region, Borsk district, Gvardeitsy village.
NATIONALITY: Russian.
EDUCATION:
1950 – finished secondary school in Krukovo village, Khimky (present Solnechnogorsk) district, Moscow region;
1952 – graduated from the Naval Mine-torpedo Pilot School;
1957 - 1961 – a student at the Air Force Academy (present the Yu.A. Gagarin Air Force Academy);
1982 – earned his Candidate of technical sciences degree.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
from December 2, 1952 – a pilot, from March 17, 1953 – a senior pilot and a section commander of Air Force mine-torpedo air regiment 1540 with the Pacific Fleet;
from February 14, 1956 – a section commander of Guard’s mine-torpedo air regiment 926 of Air Force mine-torpedo air division 13;
from September 22, 1961 – a squadron commander of Detached mine-torpedo air regiment 855 with the Black See fleet aviation.
DATE OF ENROLLMENT IN COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
January 10, 1963 – was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut of the first team (group 2) in the cosmonaut corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center by the Air Force Commander-in-Chief order;
January 23, 1965 – a cosmonaut of group 2.
RATING: October 31, 1956 – a second-class military pilot, December 24, 1964 – an instructor of the Air Force Paradrop Training, March 17, 1978 – a second-class cosmonaut.
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
July - September 1973 – the back-up crew commander of the Soyuz transport vehicle together with G. Grechko;
September 27, 1973 – a back-up man to the Soyuz-12 commander V. Lazarev.
SPACEFLIGHTS PERFORMED:
Flight 1 – January 11 – February 9, 1975 a crew commander of the Soyuz-17 transport vehicle and the Salyut-4 long-term orbital station on the first mission program together with G. Grechko. Flight duration: 29 days, 13 hours, 19 min. 45 sec. Call sign: “Zenit-1”.
Flight 2 – March 2 - 10, 1978 – a crew commander of the Soyuz-28 transport vehicle on the program of the Visiting Mission to the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with V. Remek (CzSSR). Performed his responsibilities together with Yu. Romanenko and G. Grechko. Flight duration: 7 days, 22 hours, 16 min. Call sign: “Zenit-1”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS: 1981 – was discharged from the cosmonaut corps due to the state of health.
