EDUCATION:
1959 - completed the ten-year course of the Zachistensk secondary school with Silver Medal;
1963 - graduated from the Balashov Air Force Higher Military Aviation Pilot School of Transport Aviation
1976 – completed the correspondence course of the Yu.A. Gagarin Higher Military Academy on command-and-headquarters specialty.
1984 – graduated from the K.E. Voroshilov General Headquarters Military Academy of the USSR Armed Forces on the specialty “command and tactical aviation” with honor degree and Gold Medal.
1986 - was granted a degree of Candidate of Military sciences. Doctor of Military science, professor.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
From January 14, 1964 – aircraft commander assistant, right pilot, from October 27, 1965 – commander of AN-12 spacecraft in the Air Force Military Transport Army Military Transport Aviation Division 12 Military Transport Aviation Regiment 374. The base was located at the aerodrome of Chkalovsky village near Moscow and was specialized on the search and evacuation of the landed spacecraft.
DATE OF ENROLLMENT IN COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
May 7, 1967 - was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut in the cosmonaut corps of the Cosmonaut Training Center by the Air Force commander-in-chief order (the fourth enrollment);
From August 18, 1969 - cosmonaut of the 1st Department 3rd Division cosmonaut corps.
RATING: a second-class military pilot (1967), a first-class cosmonaut (1981)
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
January, 1974 – January, 1975 – commander of the 4th crew on the Salyut-4 long term orbital station program together with Yu. Ponomarev (2-3 months with V. Sevastianov);
February – March, 1975 - commander of the 3rd crew on the Salyut-4 long term orbital station program together with Yu. Ponomarev;
February – March, 1975 - commander of the back-up crew of the 2nd on the Salyut-4 long term orbital station program together with Yu. Ponomarev;
May 24, 1975 – back-up to the Soyuz-18 spacecraft commander P. Klimouk;
November-December, 1977 – commander of the back-up crew of the 1st prime Expedition and the 1st visiting crew of the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with A. Ivanchenkov;
September, 1980 – February, 1981 – commander of the back-up crew of the Salyut-6 5th prime expedition.
SPACEFLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The 1st flightOctober 9-11, 1977, the Soyuz-25 spacecraft commander on the program of the 1st prime expedition of the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with V. Riumin. The program of the 100-day flight was not accomplished. Neither automatic nor manual docking with the long-term orbital station was performed. Flight duration: 2 days 00 hours 44 minutes 45 seconds. Call sign: “Foton-1”.
The 2nd flight – June 15-November 2, 1978, a commander of the Soyuz-29 (landed on the Soyuz-31) spacecraft on the program of the 2nd prime expedition of the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with A. Ivanchenkov. Joint operation onboard the station with the two international crews: P. Klimouk - M. Hermashewsky (PPR) and V. Bykovski – S. Jaehn (GDR). During the flight he performed 2 hour 20 minutes EVA operation in order to remove scientific equipment and test new spacesuits. Flight duration: 139 days 14 hours 47 minutes 32 seconds. Call sign: “Foton-1”.
The 3rd flight – March 12-May 26, 1981, a commander of the Soyuz T-4 spacecraft on the program of the 5th prime expedition of the Salyut-6 long-term orbital station together with V. Savinykh. Joint operation onboard the station with the two international crews: V. Dzhanibekov-J. Gurragcha (MPR) and L. Popov-D. Prunariu (SRR). Flight duration: 74 days 17 hours 37 minutes 23 seconds. Call sign: “Foton-1”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS: 1984 - is discharged from the cosmonaut corps because of the appointment to another position.
