WORLD PIONEER ACTIONS: was the first to perform manual docking of two manned space vehicles (“Soyuz-4/5”, 1969); took part in the first joint flight of three space vehicles (“Soyuz-6/7/8”, 1969); took part in the first docking of the “Souyz-10” spacecraft and “Salyut” orbital station (1971).
PLACE AND DATE OF BIRTH: Born December 1927 in Petropavlovsk, North Kazakhstan Region, Kazakh SSR.

EDUCATION:
June, 1941- finished 6 classes of secondary school No.4 in Leningrad (at present Saint-Petersburg);
September, 1941 – June, 1943 – learned and finished eight-year school in Petropavlovsk (Kazakh SSR);
1945 – finished the 6th Voronezh special school of the Air Force in Karaganda and Lipetzk;
1949 – graduated from the Kacha A.F.Miasnikov Red Banner Higher Aviation School of Pilots on the first grade;
1956- graduated with honors from the Red Banner Higher Military Academy of the USSR’s Air Force (later named for Yu.A.Gagarin) in Monino, Moscow Region.
1972 – earned a candidate of technical sciences degree.
EXPERIENCE BEFORE COSMONAUT CORPS:
from September 7, 1949 – instructor-pilot, 706 Air regiment of the Kacha Higher Air Force School;
from June 14,1951 – instructor-pilot on flying technique, 706 Air regiment of the Kacha Higher Air Force School;
December 12, 1951 – instructor-pilot of operational use, 707 Air Regiment;
from November, 1956 – deputy commander of an air squadron, then commander of an air squadron;
from May, 1960 – deputy commander, air regiment in the Air Force line units;
from February, 1961 – senior inspector-pilot, combat training department of 48 Air Army, Odessa Military District.
ENROLLMENT (ENROLLMENT ¹, DATE):
January 10, 1963 – enlisted in the cosmonaut corps of the Air Forces’ CTC as a candidate cosmonaut of the first group (2nd enrollment) by the Air Force Commander-in- Chief Order;
from January 23,1965 – cosmonaut of the 2nd group.
QUALIFICATION: first-class military pilot (1960), first-class cosmonaut (1971).
BACKUP ACTIVITY:
May 3 – December, 1965 – commander of the 3rd (stand-by) crew of the “Voskhod-3” spacecraft together with Yu.Artyukhin (mission was planned on November, 1965, but adjourned many times);
January – May 10, 1966 – second pilot of the second crew of the “Voskhod-3” spacecraft together with G.Beregovoy for the military program (planned mission duration – 16-20 days);
January, 1967 – January, 1968 – commander of the third crew of the passive “Soyuz” spacecraft together with V.Volkov and P.Kolodin for the two space vehicles on-orbit docking program;
February – July, 1968 – commander of the active “Soyuz” spacecraft (3rd crew) for the “Stykovka” program;
October 26, 1968 – backup of G.Beregovoy, commander of the “Soyuz-3” spacecraft;
August 8 – September 17, 1969 – backup crew commander of the “Soyuz-6” and “Soyuz-8” spacecraft (together with A.Yeliseyev), “Soyuz-7” spacecraft (together with A.Yeliseyev and P.Kolodin);
August 17, 1970 – commander of the third crew for the first expedition program aboard the “Salyut-1” orbital station together with V.Volkov and V.Patsayev.
SPACE MISSIONS:
1st mission – January 14-17, 1969: commander of the ”Soyuz-4” spacecraft; performed docking with the “Soyuz-5” spacecraft, after that E.Khrunov and A.Yeliseyev made a space walk from the “Soyuz-5” to the “Soyuz-4”, returning to Earth with A.Shatalov.Mission duration: 02 days 23 hours 20 minutes 47 seconds. Call sign: “Amur-1”;
2nd mission – October 13-18, 1969: commander of the “Soyuz-8” spacecraft (together with A.Yeliseyev) and commander of the three spacecraft (“Soyuz-6/7/8) group. He was unable to perform docking of the “Soyuz-8” and “Soyuz-7” spacecraft because of the “Igla” rendezvous and docking system of the “Soyuz-8” failure. Mission duration:04 days 22 hours 50 minutes 49 seconds. Call sign: “Granit-1”.
3rd mission – April 23-25, 1971: commander of the “Soyuz 10” spacecraft together with A.Yeliseyev and N.Rukavishnikov. The first docking with the “Salyut” orbital station was fulfilled. However, because of the spacecraft’s docking system failure full mating of the station and spacecraft was not reached and as a result good pressurization was not provided. So transition from the spacecraft into the station was called of and early landing was performed. Mission duration: 01 days 23 hours 45 minutes 54 seconds. Call sign: Granit-1”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS:
1998 – discharged from the cosmonaut corps due to assignment as Assistant on cosmonaut training and space mission provision of the Air Force Commander-in-Chief.
