October 1972 – graduated from the Chernigov Higher Air Force School named after Lenin Komsomol with the certificate of a military pilot-engineer.

from July 14, 1964 – a general labourer at the Riga building materials factory, the Latvian SSR;
September 10, 1964 – July 10, 1967 – a metalworker at the worsted manufacturing corporation in Riga;
March 14 – August 1, 1968 – a metalworker at the Latvian combined air group in Riga;
from November 1972 – was at the command of the Commander of Special Far Eastern AA 1, Far Eastern AD;
from November 27, 1972 – a senior pilot;
from November 1, 1974 – a section commander of detached air reconnaissance regiment 352 of Special FEA 1, FED.
DATE OF ENROLLMENT IN COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
August 23, 1976 – was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut (group 6) in the cosmonaut corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center by the Air Force Commander-in-Chief order;

Flight 2 – February 11 – August 9, 1990 – a commander of the Soyuz TM-9 crew and the Mir orbital station on the BE-6 program together with A. Balandin. Performed his responsibilities aboard the station together with A. Viktorenko and A. Serebrov (BE-5), G. Manakov and G. Strekalov (BE-7). Performed two space walks logging 10 hours and 31 min. Flight duration: 179 days 01 min. 17 hours 57 sec. Call sign: “Rodnik-1”;
Flight 3 – July 27, 1992 – February 1, 1993 – a commander of the Soyuz TM-15 transport vehicle and the Mir orbital station on the BE-12 program together with S. Avdeyev and M. Tognini (France). Performed his responsibilities aboard the station together with A. Viktorenko and A. Kaleri, G. Manakov and A. Poleschuk. During the flight he performed 4 space walks logging 18 hours 21 min. Flight duration: 188 days 21 hours 41 min. 15 sec. Call sign: “Rodnik-1”;
Flight 4 – June 27 – September 11, 1995 – the BE-19 commander aboard the Mir station together with N. Budarin. The Russian crew was for the first time delivered to the station aboard the Atlantis shuttle on the STS-71 program (the crew – R. Gibson, Ch. Precourt, E. Baker, G. Harbaugh and B. Dunbar). Performed his responsibilities aboard the station together with V. Dezhurov, G. Strekalov, N. Thagard (BE-18), as well as with Yu. Gidzenko, S. Avdeyev and T. Reiter (BE-20). Performed 3 space walks logging 14 hours 32 min. Flight duration: 75 days 11 hours 20 min. 21 sec. Call sign: “Rodnik-1”;
Flight 5 – August 5, 1997 – February 19, 1998– a commander of the Soyuz TM-26 transport vehicle and the Mir orbital station on the BE-24 program together with P. Vinogradov. Flight duration:197 days 17 hours 34 min. 36 sec. Call sign: “Rodnik-1”;

1999 – was discharged from the cosmonaut corps having reached the age limit.
